About School-Age Swimming Lessons

What’s a competent swimmer?

We know from experience that parents can have very different ideas about what defines a competent swimmer. Some think it’s enough if their child can get from one end of the pool to the other; others expect Olympic-class style and endurance. By talking to you about your child’s current abilities, we can help you to set swimming goals that are appropriate for New Zealand’s lifestyle and your own expectations.

Correct technique and confidence

We focus on teaching correct swimming technique, so that children feel confident in the water, can swim at least 200 metres (in line with Water Safety NZ standards) without stopping and aren’t struggling for breath in the pool. Then if the child wants to progress from competent swimmer to competitive swimmer, we can help them get there.

Fun is as important as learning

Children look forward to their swimming lessons at Hilton Brown because we make sure it’s an enjoyable experience. Our swimming teachers provide positive feedback and know how to keep their customers happy in the pool.

Continuous progress

Assessment of current swimming and water skills, over the phone or in person, helps us to match each child with an appropriate learning level. Once lessons start, we continually review progress and promote children who are ready to move up. Children are praised for their achievements. They also receive a certificate for completing a level – evidence of their progress keeps them enthusiastic about lessons. Most other swimming schools only assess progress at the end of each term.

Testimonials:

  • Kirsty Donovan

“Our two children have been swimming at Hilton Brown Swimming for a number of years (and more recently my husband has started adult swimming lessons too!) and we have nothing but praise for the expert tuition they receive. The swimming tutors are positive, enthusiastic, patient and extremely professional. They clearly have a passion for what they do, and combined with the excellent administration staff they all provide a happy, fun, supportive and safe learning environment.”

  • Sharon Young

“My family has been swimming with Hilton Brown since 2003. Throughout the years the coaches have changed but not their professionalism or caring nature. They are always striving to get the best out of every child. I would have no hesitation in recommending them to new families.”
